“El Obelisco”

July 1st, 2010

Meters away from congress, one of the most interesting monuments arises, “El Obelisco”. It is the symbol from a citizenship culture, with about 67m high over 9 de Julio avenue. The relation from this monument with the tango made it become the symbol from the city.

A little bit from history:

It was the tribute for the 400th anniversary of the first foundation from Buenos Aires. Represented the progress spirit from the era.

The design was from the architect Alberto Prebisch, the design tryed to solve with elegance and monumentality the triple junction of two of the most important avenues of the city, and later on added the Diagonal Norte avenue, recently built.

It was located in the exact place where for the very first time the national flag was arisen (the St. Nicholas church, August 23, 1812), and was formally inaugurated on May 23, 1936.

Once completed the construction, opposition to the goverment wanted to demolish it. In 1939 the City Council decided its demolition, but the mayor vetoed the ordinance. The obelisk was a monument under the jurisdiction of the Nation!.

Public Transport in Argentina

June 18th, 2010

Argentina, specially Buenos Aires has a public transport that covers most of the places in town. Trains and subways are useful to reach certain places, but being unafraid of buses maybe a great opportunity to get to know Buenos Aires better.

The congress will be held in front of most of the train stations, in Retiro. There are some other places like Constitución terminal, where the trains mostly go to south-east of Bs.As. Below you can find a map from the trains that can be from great help, including all the stations that they are stopping.

Underground is a great way to travel as well, there are 6 lines of subways and you can make a transfer to the trains in some of them. The subway lines covers all the important tourist point form the town so you wont have any trouble with the transfers. As well, below there is another map.

Finally, the buses are a great way to move around, but there are many of them. This maybe will be a bit annoying at the first time, but with a little bit of help it can be the best way to travel. In every newspaper selling store (there are almost 1 every 2 blocks) you can buy a guide called “Guia T”, it costs around u$s2,50 and has every information you need for the buses, where they go and how, where they stop and also some useful telephone numbers.

There are ceratin transports that accept a new electronic way to pay, a card called Monedero is compatible with most of the trains and some buses, but that is better that you look in every place you want to go if it is accepted. Some of the fares for the transport can be a round ticket, week ticket or 15 days tickets for the trains (the fare is around u$s0,30 each travel). Subways and buses are paid in the moment and a trip can cost from u$s0,30 up to u$s0,50.

Taxis are the most easy, and expensive way to travel. The travel costs u$s1,00 as you go up the taxi and u$s0,10 per 200 mts you travell.

Here then, are the promised maps:
