Meters away from congress, one of the most interesting monuments arises, “El Obelisco”. It is the symbol from a citizenship culture, with about 67m high over 9 de Julio avenue. The relation from this monument with the tango made it become the symbol from the city.
A little bit from history:
It was the tribute for the 400th anniversary of the first foundation from Buenos Aires. Represented the progress spirit from the era.
The design was from the architect Alberto Prebisch, the design tryed to solve with elegance and monumentality the triple junction of two of the most important avenues of the city, and later on added the Diagonal Norte avenue, recently built.
It was located in the exact place where for the very first time the national flag was arisen (the St. Nicholas church, August 23, 1812), and was formally inaugurated on May 23, 1936.
Once completed the construction, opposition to the goverment wanted to demolish it. In 1939 the City Council decided its demolition, but the mayor vetoed the ordinance. The obelisk was a monument under the jurisdiction of the Nation!.
